In the 1970s, Philip Morris was the largest
tobacco company in the USA. Anti-smoking campaigns ate away at their profits, so they globalized
What is McDonaldization?
Term coined by George Ritzer to describe the homogenizing effects of globalization.
What term do Symbolic interactionalists use instead of using Globalization?
Glocalization. Refers to the simultaneous homogenization of some aspects of life and the strengthening of some local differences under the impact of globalization.
What is Neoliberal Globilization?
Promotes private control of industry with minimal governmental interference in the economy.
What is Modernization theory (functionalist perspective)?
Economic under-development results from poor countries lacking Western attributes, including Western values, business practices, levels of investment capital, and stable governments.
What is the best way to help? Transfer these ideals – via culture and capital – to them.
What is dependency theory (Conflict Theory Approach)?
Was a reaction to Modernization theory. Conflict theorists see economic underdevelopment as the result of exploitive relations between rich and poor countries. Colonizers prevented these nations from industrializing and therefore locking them into poverty
