What is the political economy?
The interdisciplinary, social scientific study of the ways in which wealth influences power and power influences wealth.
What is power?
the ability to control others, even against their will.
What is the role of government?
Governments set policies, laws, and regulations that affect the creation and distribution of wealth in society.
What are the role of political parties?
compete, via elections, to form the government
What are the top 5 political parties in Canada?
Liberal, Conservative, NDP, Green and bloc
What are social movements?
Social Movements form to
challenge the laws and regulations with the aim of causing change in the way wealth is created and
distributed.
What was Max Weber’s 3 ideal types of Authority?
Traditional authority, Legal-rational authority and charismatic authority
What is traditional authority?
Rulers INHERIT authority through family or clan
Ties. The right of a family or a clan to monopolize
Leadership is widely believed to derive from the Will of God.
What is legal-rational authority?
In modern societies, authority derives from
respect for the law. Laws specify how a person
can achieve office. People generally believe
laws are rational. If someone achieves office
by following the law, his or her authority is
respected.
What is charismatic authority?
Sometimes extraordinary charismatic individuals challenge traditional or Legal-Rational Authority. They claim to be inspired by (a) God or some higher principle that transcends
other forms of authority
What is a political revolution?
the overthrow of political institutions by an opposition movement and its replaced by new institutions.
What does the state consist of?
The state consists of the institutions responsible for formulating and carrying our a country’s laws and public policies.
What is the main state institutions?

What is civil society?
Civil Society is the private sphere of social life. It consists of the areas of social life that are organized by individuals and groups beyond the direct control of The State.
