Chapter 9: Endocrine System Flashcards
What are the two regulating system of the body?
the Nervous System and the Endocrine System
What PROCESSES do hormones control? (5)
reproduction, growth and development, mobilization of body defenses, long-term maintenance of most homeostasis parameters, and regulation of metabolism
What are hormones produced by?
specialized epithelial cells
How does the ENDOCRINE system control body systems?
by using hormones that are released into the blood
What are the THREE classifications (chemically) for hormones?
amino acid-based; steroids; prostaglandine
What are STEROIDS made of?
cholesterol
What are PROSTAGLANDINE made of?
highly active lipids
What are some of the things hormones stimulate/inhibit?
cell membrane permeability; (activation/inactivation) enzymes; (stimulation/inhibition) cell division; (s/i) secretion of a product; (a/i) transcription of certain genes
What are the TWO MECHANISMS that hormones act by?
Direct gene activation; secondary messenger system
What hormones use DIRECT GENE ACTIVATION?
steroid hormones and thyroxine
What hormones use SECONDARY MESSENGER SYSTEM?
protein and peptide hormones
What is the DIRECT GENE ACTIVATION PROCESS?
- steroid hormone diffuses through cell membrane; 2. hormone enters the nucleus; 3. hormone binds to a specific receptor protein; 4. hormone-receptor complex binds to specific site; 5. specific genes are activated to transcribe the DNA into mRNA; 6. new proteins are synthesized
