Group
Two or more people who interact with one another such that each person influences and is influenced by each other person
Formal Group
A group formed by an organization to do its work
Command Group
A relatively permanent, formal group with functional reporting relationships and is usually included in the organization chart
Task Group
A relatively temporary, formal group established to do a specific task
Affinity Groups
Collections of employees from the same level in the organization who meet on a regular basis to share information, capture emerging opportunities, and solve problems
Informal Group
A group established by its members
Friendship Group
A group that is relatively permanent and informal and draws its benefits from the social relationships among its memebers
Interest Group
A group that is relatively temporary and informal and is organized around a common activity or interest of its memebers
Mutual Acceptance Stage
The stage of group development that is characterized by memebers’ sharing information about themselves and getting to know each other
Communication and Decision-Making Stage
In this stage of group development, members discuss their feelings more openly and agree on group goals and individual roles in the group
Motivation and Productivity Stage
In this stage of group development, members cooperate, help each other, and work toward accomplishing tasks
Control and Organization Stage
In this stage of group development, the group is mature; members work together and are flexible, adaptive, and self-correcting
Group Composition
The degree of similarity or difference among group members on factors important to the group’s work
Group Performance Factors
Composition, size, norms, and cohesiveness–affect the success of the group in fulfilling its goals
Group Size
The number of members of the group’ group size affects the number of resources available to perform the task
Social Loafing
The tendency of some members of groups to put forth less effort in a group than they would when working alone
Norm
A standard against which the appropriateness of a behavior is judged
Group Cohesiveness
The extent to which a group is committed to staying together
Groupthink
A mode of thinking that occurs when members of a group are deeply involved in a cohesive in-group, and the desire for unanimity offsets their motivation to appraise alternative courses of action
Group Polarization
The tendency for a group’s average post-discussion attitudes to be more extreme than its average pre-discussion attitudes
Brainstorming
A technique used in the idea-generation phase of decision making that assists in development of numerous alternative courses of action
Nominal Group Technique
With this technique, group members follow a generate-discuss-vote cycle until they reach a decsions
Delphi Technique
This is a method of systematically gathering judgments of experts for use in developing forecasts
