Chapter 9 Flashcards
What are the four stages of the sexual response cycle?
Excitement
Plateau
Orgasm
Resolution
What is excitement in reference to the sexual response cycle?
Muscle tension, respiration rate, heart rate, and blood pressure increase quickly. Vasocongestion, an engorgement of blood vessels occurs
What is plateau in reference to the sexual response cycle?
Physiological arousal continues to build, but at a much slower pace
What is orgasm in reference to the sexual response cycle?
Sexual arousal reaches its peak intensity and is discharged in a series of muscular contractions that pulsate through the pelvic area
What is resolution in reference to the sexual response cycle? What is another name for this stage for men?
The physiological changes produced by sexual arousal gradually subside
Refractory period
What is homeostasis?
The body maintaining equilibrium in the internal evnironment
What is parental involvement theory?
Suggests that basic differences between males and females in parental investment have great adaptive significance and lead to gender differences in mating tendencies and preferences
What is the behavioral outcome of male sexual activity due to the low investment risk?
More interest in uncommitted sex, greater number of sex partners over lifetime, look for youth and attractiveness in partners
What is the behavioral outcome of female sexual activity due to the high investment risk?
Less interest in uncommitted sex, smaller number of sex partners over lifetime, look for income, status, and ambition in partners
As age increases, which gender gives less thought/effort in their sexual aspect of their lives?
Female
What is sexual orientation?
A person’s preference for emotional and sexual relationships with those of the same sex, the other sex, or either sex
What is the definition of heterosexual?
People who seek emotional-sexual relationships with members of the other sex
What is the definition of bisexual?
People who seek emotional-sexual relationships with members of other sex
What is the definition of homosexual?
People who seek emotional-sexual relationships with members of the same sex
Who was one of the first people who studied homosexuality and created a scale of sexual orientation from 0-6?
Kinsey
What percentage of BYU students are not of a strictly heterosexual orientation?
13.2%
Between the BYU students of those that are heterosexual and those that are in a sexual minority, which group had a higher overall well-being and less substance abuse?
Heterosexual/sexual majority group
What are the 3 biological theories of homosexuality?
Heritability of sexual orientation is similar in men and women
Roots of homosexuality may lie in the organizing effects of prenatal hormones on neurological development
Sexual orientation may be more fluid and malleable in women than in men
Is there a “gay gene”?
No, but genetics do have an influence
What is the fraternal birth-order effect?
The more older brothers you have, the more likely you are to identify as homosexual (for men). Female siblings have no effect
What is the fecundity effect?
The more females that are in a family (sisters, females, cousins), the more likely you are to identify as homosexual (for women)
What is the neurohormonal effect?
Testosterone has a large influence on sexual orientation as well as finger length. Measuring finger length is an indicator of the testosterone
Holland’s counsel on helping those with SSA
1; Attractions alone do not make one unworthy, but the desire for physical gratification does not authorize immorality by anyone
2: To help, recognize courage; recognize trust
3: Don’t assume you are the reason (especially for parents)
4: Recognize that marriage is not an all-purpose solution (MOM: Mixed-orientation marriage, 80% divorce rate)
5: Keep the lines of communication open
6: The garden: create a positive, spiritual environment at home and at church
7: Perhaps encourage a visit with a priesthood leader
What is achievement motive?
The need to master difficult challenges, to outperform others, and to meet high standards of excellence
What is a TAT?
Thematic apperception test
Select cards and show them to someone, and then ask the subject to tell a story about a card
