apotheosis
The raising of human beings to a dinvie level, or to be deified.
atlatl
A stick thrower, or a device that aids the throwingof a stick or spear.
attic
The uppermost story in a structure.
bargeboards
Boards that conceal roof timbers projecting over gables; often decorated.
barrel vault
Vault is a type of ceiling structure based on the design of the arch. A barrel vault is an extension of the vault from front to back.
Byzantium
The Byzantine style dated from 527 to 1453 C and was associated with Byzantium (Constantinople, now Istanbul, Turkey is a good example) The artwork “Emperor Justinian and His Attendants” is a good example of the Byzantine style.
Chi-Rho
An ancient symbol of Christ. Found on the soldier’s shield in “Emperor Justinian and His Attendants”.
Classical Baroque style
Classical architectural elements that also have the Baroque characteristics of artifice and theatricality. Think climatic moment, lighting, and movement.
compositional devices
Visual elements and design principles seen in the composition.
condottiere
Mercenary soldiers who fought for various city-states during the European Renaissance.
corbel vaults
A corbel is made up of a series of stones or bricks stacked so that each new layer projects beyond the layer below it. These stones or bricks can also be arranged to create a vault. An example is inside the ‘Palace at Palenque’
Cubism
“Guernica” is a good example of this style. Cubism was created by Braque and Picasso. The composition shows multiple points of view represented within one point of view.
Gothic Revival
A 19th century style of art that evoked Medieval gothic architecture, craft, and painting.
hypostyle hall
A large hall in which a grid of columns support the roof.
Think post and lintel.
horizontal registers
Ex. “Palette of King Narmer” The horizontal divisions separate scenes. Can communicate a narrative.
