support
The material that underlies the work. For example paper can be the support for drawing, photography and painting. An armature can be a support for a clay sculpture.
pencil
graphite rod in a metal or wood holder
charcoal
carbon stick created from burnt wood
chalk and pastels
materials held together by wax or glue and shaped into sticks
silverpoint
drawing produced by thin stylus made of silver that leaves marks on paper or wood coated with layers of gesso as a ground
ground
a fluid brushed onto a support to change the surface quality and usually seal the surface
gesso
a common ground made of very fine powdered white chalk suspended in glue or ann acrylic medium
printmaking
a process of making multiple artworks or impressions usually on paper, using a printing plate, woodblock, stone or stencil.
relief printing
non-printing areas are cut away from a smooth surface, so that the areas to be printed are left higher.
intaglio
these prints have fine lines, a high level of detail, and rich, dark tones.
drypoint
artist scratches a metal plate with a thin, pointed tool called a burin, or a graver.
engraving
entails cutting or incising lines into a laminated woodblock or a polished metal plate. Thh ink is rubbed into the recessed lines, and the block or plate is put through the press
etching
a metal plate is coated with a sticky protective ground, into which the artist scratches a design.
aquatint
a process related to etching used to create flat tones or softly shifting values
lithography
starts with a drawing created with an oily crayonn, pencil or liquid on either a limestone slab or a metal surface.
monotype
makes only one impression of an image using either a sheet of metal or plexiglass
Photo silk screens
variations on a regular screen printing process. Photographs are used with special chemicals to block the ink in certain areas from being squeezed through to the paper.

intense colors in powder form
