Abstract Expressionism
In reference to Robert Motherwell’s work. An art movement that emerged after WWII. Emphasized spontaneous artistic self-expression, non-representational imagery, and distinct paint application. Most works were paintings.
apartheid
Referring to South Africa and the artist William Kentridge. Apartheid is a system of laws and social standards that repressed the native population.
Automatism
Associated with Surrealism. It incorporates the intuition, spontaneity and the accidental when creating artworks.
caricatures
The exaggeration of natural features usually seen for comic or satirical effect.
Dreamtime symbols
Symbols created by the Aboriginal culture.
glyphs
A figure or character that has symbolic meaning and is most often carved in relief.
photomontage
A composition of many photographs , or one using many prints to create a new image.
status quo
Existing state of affairs, which appears natural or inevitable.
