Communist Manifesto
Co-authored by Karl Marx in 1848. It provides a critique on capitalism.
Cubism
Developed by Braque and Picasso. Cubism experienced different developments in it’s style seen in Analytical and Synthetic Cubism. Derivative styles from Cubism influenced artists such as Leger. It often includes multiple perspectives, patterns, repeating colors or shapes to create movement and distortion of space and time as seen in from one point of view.
Earthworks
An example is the “Spiral Jetty” by Smithson. The earth itself and natural phenommena can become sculptural materials.
Futurism
An art movement in Italy around 1910 that celebrated the speed, energy, change and upheaval of the machine age.
Impressionism
A late 19th century painting style, originating in Western Europe, that attempts to capture subtle light qualities or fleeting moments with small strokes o strong color.
Industrial Revolution
Industrialized countries, particularly in Europe, were colonizing in other parts of the world that were typically un-industrialized. During the Industrial Revolution, amazing advances in technology as well as profound social changes including the development of the Middle Class and an industrial working class, the creation of factories, great increases in population, and mass migration into urban areas.
Modernization
With industrialization, came modernization. That transformations that took place from the Industrial Revolution helped to create modernized societies.
Nationalism
Nationalism is devotion to one’s country, especially promoting that country’s interests and culture above all others.
Nazca
Drawings created in the earth by the Nazca culture, a pre-Incan civilization in southwestern Peru. The drawings were made at least 1,400 years ago by scraping the brown surface of the desert floor to reveal a lighter color. All drawings have lines are a standard width, simple and lack detail.
Op Art
A 1960s style of art that created unusual visual vibrations with contrasting colors or closely placed lines.
Ramayana
A Thai and Indian story. The Rama is represented by a mask depicting the white-monkey hero and loyal follower of the deity Rama.
Romanticism
An art movement in 19th century Europe that focused on the intuitive, emotional and picturesque. It rejected the carefully planned and rationalized compositions of the Renaissance and added a sense of mysticism to art.
