Chapter 9 #1-22 Flashcards
Crop land
Land used to raise plants for human use.
Agriculture
The practice of raising crops and livestock for human use and consumption.
Industrialized agriculture
Boosts yields by intensifying irrigation and introducing synthetic fertilizers. While the advent of chemical pesticides reduced competition from weeds and herbivore by crop pests.
Bedrock
The continuous mass of solid rock that makes up earths crust.
Erosion
The dislodging and movement of soil from one area to another.
Horizon
Each layer of soil.
O horizon
Litter layer. Consists mostly of organic matter deposited by organisms.
A horizon
Top soil. Consists of some organic material mixed with mineral components
E horizon
Minerals and organic matter tend to leach out
B horizon
Subsoil. Where minerals and organic matter accumulate
C horizon
Consists largely of weathered parent material unaltered or only slightly altered by the process of soil formation.
R horizon
Pure parent material
Clay
Consists of particles less than 0.002 mm in diameter
Desertification
A loss of more than 10% productivity due to erosion, soil compaction, forest removal, overgrazing, drought, salinization, climate change, depletion of water sources, and other factors.
Dust bowl
The most affected region in the southern Great Plains
Conservation districts
Operate with federal direction, authorization, and funding, but they are organized by states.
Crop rotation
Farmers alternate the type of crop grown in a given field from one season or year to the next.
Contour farming
Consists of plowing furrows sideways across hillside, perpendicular to its slope, to help prevent formation of rills and gullies
Fertilizer
Any various substances that contain essential nutrients
Cation exchange
Process by which plants roots donate hydrogen ions to the soul in exchange for cations. The soul particles then replenish these cations by exchange with soil water
Green revolution
During half the 20th century it has dramatically increased cell yields produced per unit area of farmland.
Humus
A dark, spongy, crumbly mass of material made up of complex organic compounds, resulting from the partial decomposition of organic matter
