Chapter 6 #1-18 Flashcards
Biome
A major regional complex of similar communities-a large ecological unit recognized primarily by it dominant plant type and vegetation structure.
amensalism
A relationship in which one organism is harmed and the other is unaffected
Boreal forest
Also known as taiga; stretches in a broad band across much of Canada, Alaska, Russia, and Scandinavia. Also just northern coniferous forest.
Chaparral
Limited to fairly small patches widely flung around the globe, continuous distribution.
Climate diagrams(climatographs)
A visual representation of a regions average monthly temperature and precipitation. To depict information
Competition
When multiple organisms seek the same limited resource, there relationship is to compete against one another.
Fundamental niche
The full niche(ecological role) of a species.
Parasitism
A relationship when one organism, the parasite, depends on another, the host, for nourishment or some other benefit while simultaneously doing the host harm.
Herbivory
Occurs when animals feed on the tissues of plants.
Commensalism
One species benefits and the other is unaffected
Key stone species
A species that has strong or wide-reaching impact far out of proportion to its abundance.
Pioneer species
Species that arrive first and colonize the new substrate
Invasive species
Can potentially alter a community substantially and are one of the central ecological forces in today’s world
Ecological restoration
Realization has given rise to the conservation effort.
Desert
Where rainfall is very sparse, driest biome on earth
