Chapter 8: Nervous system (PT. 2) Flashcards
The spinal cord begins where?
below the foramen magmum… to verteberal level between L1/L2
Where does the spinal cord end?
ends in tapered cone, called Conus Medullaris
Cauda Equina:
“horse tail” group of nerves found at end of spinal cord
BONUS FUN QUESTION:
Where did the lady with the name “Cauda Equina” work at? (in Chicago)
CVS
How many spinal nerves are there in total?
31 pairs
What do those 31 spinal nerves consists of?
-8 pairs of CERVICAL
-12 pairs of THORACIC
-5 pairs of LUMBAR
-5 pairs of SACRAL
-1 pair of COCCYGEAL
What is the Medial aspect of the spinal cord called?
Horns
What is the Lateral aspect of the spinal cord called?
Columns
Cerebrum is also known as…
the large brain
Cerebellum is known as the…
small brain
Which cerebral hemisphere is the MOST dominant?
LEFT cerebral hemisphere is the most dominant >:)
Among the cerebrum, there are 5 lobes on the brain. What are they?
-Frontal lobe (motor/body movement) **
-Parietal lobe (feelings, touch) ** EX: Meissner
-Occipital lobe (visual) **
-Temporal lobe (auditory)
-Insula (gustatory/taste)
What are Meninges?
connective tissue membranes (3-layers) of brain and spinal cord
What are the 3 layers of the Meninges?
-Dura mater (tough layer; MOST superficial)
-Arachnoid mater (thin middle layer; SPIDER-WEBS)
-Pia mater (MOST deep)
What is the subarachnoid space? (found in the arachnoid mater)
space where CSF is contained
If a patient has meningitis, what would that mean?
infection of 1/3 layers of the meninges
AGAIN, how many cranial nerves are there?
12 pairs
While there’s 12 pairs in total, only name 5 (only those will be on the exam)
CN I (1): Olfactory (smell)
CN II (2): Optic (vision)
CN V (5): Trigeminal (touch sensation to forehead, face, and lower jaw)
CN VII (7): Facial (facial expression)
CN X (10): Vagus (organs of digestive system)
NOW, out of the 7 cranial nerves we didn’t name… what 3 nerves MOVE OCULAR (eyeball) MUSCLES?
-CN III (3): Oculomotor nerve
-CN IV (4): Trochlear nerve (superior oblique muscle)
-CN VI (6): Abducens nerve (lateral rectus muscle)
