Chapter 8: Nervous System Flashcards
Functions of NS:
-maintains homeostasis (internal environment)
-sensory receptors
-information
-control activities (muscles & glands)
-mental activities
What are the 2 structures of the Nervous System?
-Central Nervous System
-Peripheral Nervous System
What is the CNS made of?
-brain
-brainstem
-spinal cord
What is the brainstem made of?
midbrain, pons, and medulla oblongata
WHERE is the brainstem located?
located between brain & spinal cord
What is the PNS made of?
-cranial nerves (cranium; 12 pairs)
-spinal nerves (bilateral; 31 pairs)
-peripheral nerves
-sensory receptors
What is a neuron?
neuron = nerve cell
Sensory neuron (Afferent); function classification
relays action potential to CNS
Association neuron (Interneuron)
located between sensory and motor neurons
Motor neuron (Efferent)
relays action potential AWAY from CNS to effector (like a muscle)
Unipolar (pseudo-unipolar) neuron:
has ONE projection… on cell body
Bipolar neuron:
has TWO projection… on cell body
Multipolar neuron:
has MORE THAN TWO projections… on cell body
What’s the anatomy of a MULTIPOLAR neuron?
-cell body, AKA Soma
-dendrites
-axon
-myelin sheath
What is the cell body?
contains organelles; AKA, soma
What are dendrites?
short extensions that carry info to cell body
What is an axon?
long extension that carries info AWAY from cell body
What is soma also known as? (AKA)
cell body
What is myelin sheath?
insulate & increase the speed of action potential
NOW… what are glial cells?
specialized cells
What are the 6 glial cells?
-Microglial cell
-Astrocyte
-Ependymal cell
-Choroid plexus
-Oligodendrocyte
-Schwann cell
What are microglial cells?
specialized CNS macrophages (they kill micro-organisms and infection) AKA, the immune cell
What are astrocytes?
star-shaped cells; are BBB (blood-brain-barrier)
What is BBB, again?
blood-brain-barrier
