Chapter 5: Integumentary Flashcards
Structures:
Skin & accessory organs of skin; hair, nails, glands, and smooth muscle (arrector pili).
Functions:
-sensation
-temperature regulation
-vitamin D
-excretion of waste products
-protection (against abrasion, microorganisms, and UV radiation)
What is the arrector pili?
smooth muscle that makes hair stand on end (goosebumps)
What are the 2 layers of the skin?
-epidermis
-dermis
What is the epidermis?
SUPERFICIAL layer of stratified squamous tissue; PROTECTS & REDUCES WATER LOSS
What is the dermis?
DEEP connective layer; STRUCTURAL STRENGTH; sebaceous gland (sebum), hair follicle, arrector pili
Subcutaneous tissue (Hypodermis)
NOT part of skin; loose connective tissue made of adipose tissue (fat) that connects the skin to underlying structures
Pacinian corpusule:
senses PRESSURE touch
Meissner corpussule
senses 2-point discrimination touch (ex: two fingers touching arm)
free nerve endings:
detect PAIN
merkel cell
detects light/superficial touch
Epidermis has 5 layers
-stratum corneum (most superficial)
-stratum lucidum (clear cells)
-stratum granulosum (granules)
-stratum spinosum (spiny)
-stratum basale (most deep; base)
Does thick skin have all 5 epithelial strata?
Yes. EX: palms or soles
Does Thin skin have all 5 strata layers?
NO. Thin skin only has 4 layers (excludes lucidum)
Unlike thick, THIN skin is/has:
more flexible and has hair
What is Callus?
increase in layers in stratum corneum (corn forming)
AGAIN, where is stratum lucidum (clear cells) only found?
ONLY in thick skin
What does the stratum basale (base) have?
highest mitotic activity (cell division)
What are the cells of the epidermis?
-keratinocytes
-melanocytes
-langerhans cells
-merkel cells
Keratinocytes?
cells that produce keratin for strength and H2O proof
Melanocytes:
skin color pigment and skin protection (SAME # FOR EVERYONE, NO MATTER SKIN COLOR)
Langerhans cells:
part of immune system
Merkel cells:
detect light/superficial pressure or touch
What 3 factors determine skin color?
-pigment
-blood circulation
-thickness of stratum corneum
