chapter 8 memory Flashcards
sensory memory
holds sensory info. long enough for us to attend it
pre-attentive processing
filters incoming info., meaning we see a lot were not actually aware of. large capacity and short duration
sperling experiment (1960)
showed subjects 12 letters for < 1 second , asked them to report as many as they could
sperling experiment outcomes
no one reported all letters, and reported letters varied. we can see the info but it fades quickly.
partial report technique with the sperling experiment
he wanted everyone to get the same letters.
the sperling experiment has many outcomes
we can sense all the info. present, but do not have enough time to attend to all of it.
iconic memory
visual sensory memory, it lasts less than one second, inattentional blindness.
echoic memory
auditory sensory memory, lasts a few seconds
cocktail party effect
even though not there still heard what they said.
short-term memory (AKA working memory)
area of consciousness
attention
transfers info. from sensory memory to short-term memory. short duration and small capacity
rehearsal
maintains info. in short term memory
STM capacity
7 +/ -2 pieces of info
STM loss
decay
decay
fade away
