What is INTIMACY?
the degree to which two people share personal knowledge, thoughts, and feelings
What is SELECTIVE ASSOCIATION?
the principle that most people tend to choose friends who are similar to themselves
What is INFORMATIONAL SUPPORT?
advice and guidance in solving personal problems
What is INSTRUMENTAL SUPPORT?
help with various kinds of tasks
What is COMPANIONSHIP SUPPORT?
reliance on each other as companions in social activities
What is ESTEEM SUPPORT?
providing congratulations for success and encouragement or consolation for the future
What are CLIQUES?
small groups of friends who know each other well, do things together, and form a regular social group; 3-12 people
What is RELATIONAL AGGRESSION?
a form of nonphysical aggression that harms others by damaging their relationships > excluding them socially or spreading rumours about them
What are CROWDS?
large, reputation-based groups of adolescents
What is PARTICIPANT OBSERVATION?
research that involves taking part in various activities with the people being studied and learning about them through participating in these activities with them

a method for assessing popularity that involves having students rate the social status of other studentsW
What are SOCIAL SKILLS?
skills for successfully handling social relations and getting along well with others
Describe NEGLECTED ADOLESCENTS
those who have few or no friends and are largely unnoticed by their peers; rarely mentioned as liked or disliked, other teens have trouble remembering who they are
Describe REJECTED ADOLESCENTS
those who are actively disliked by their peers, usually bc others find them aggressive, disruptive, quarrelsome
What is SOCIAL INFORMATION PROCESSING?
the interpretation of others’ behaviours and intentions in a social interaction
Describe CONTROVERSIAL ADOLESCENTS.
those who are aggressive but also possess social skills, so they evoke strong emotions both positive and negative from their peers
What is YOUTH CULTURE?
the culture of young people as a whole, separate from children and separate from adult society, characterized by values of hedonism and irresponsibility
What are SUBTERRANEAN VALUES?
hedonism, excitement, adventure > adults hold these values too but are allowed to express them only in restricted forms of leisure, while youths and emerging adults express them more openly
