Chapter 7 Vocab Set 93-125 Flashcards
The cartilaginous joint (amphiarthrosis) that unites the two sides of the mandible at the rostral (front) end
Mandibular symphysis
The horizontal portion of the mandible that houses all the lower teeth.
Shaft of the mandible
The vertical portion of the mandible located at the caudal end. This is where the powerful jaw muscles attach to the mandible
Ramus of the mandible
Skull bones that are part of the internal bones of the face. These two bones make up the caudal portion of the hard palate
Palatine bones
Nasal conchae. Skull bones that are part of the internal vibes of the face. Four thin scroll like bones that fill most of the space in the nasal cavity. Covered by the most vascular lining of the nasal passages. Their shape helps the nasal lining warm and humidify the inhaled air and trap tiny particles of inhaled foreign material
Turbinate
The midline barrier that separates the left and right nasal passages
Nasal septum
A skull bones that is one of the internal bones of the face. Forms part of the nasal septum

Skull bones that are part of the internal bones of the face. Supports part of the lateral walls of the pharynx
Pterygoid bones
the bone in the neck region that supports the base of the tongue, the pharynx, and the larynx and aids the process of swallowing. It is composed of several portions. Is attached to the temporal bone by two small rods of cartilage.
hyoid bone/apparatus
the collective name for the cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacral, and coccygeal vertebrae
spinal/vertebral column
the cartilaginous disc located between the bodies of adjacent vertebrae. It acts as a shock absorber for the vertebrae
intervertebral disc
the long flexible, caudal portion of the dorsal body cavity formed by the adjacent arches of the vertebrae of the spine. Houses and protects the spinal cord.
spinal canal
the single, dorsally projecting process of a vertebra
spinous process
a lateral projecting process of a vertebra that act as sites for muscle attachment and provide leverage the move the spine and trunk
transverse processes
the process of the vertebra that forms a synovial joint with an adjacent vertebra. Located on the cranial and caudal ends of the vertebral arches.
articular process
