Chapter 7: Telecommunications, the Internet, and Wireless Technology Flashcards
What is a network operating system?
This system routes and manages communications on a network
What are hubs?
Devices connecting network components
What is a switch?
This can filter and forward data to anywhere in the network
What is a router?
A router processes data packets through different networks
What is software-defined networking?
This is a networking approach where many control functions are run by one program. Useful in cloud computing
What are key digital networking technologies?
- Client/server computing
- Packet switching
- TCP/IP and connectivity
What is packet switching?
Messages are sliced into packkets and sending them along different communications path. They are reassembled once they arrive at their destination
What is a protocol?
These are rules and procedures for transmission of information
What is TCP/IP
This stands for Transmission Control Protocol/ Internet Protocol. This is developed to help transmit data over long distances.
Name the four layers of TCP/IP
- Application layer
- Transport layer
- Internet layer
- Network Interface layers
What is an application layer of TCP/IP?
Enables client application program access to other layers and defines data exchange protocols
What is the transport layer of TCP/IP?
This provides the first layer with communication and packet services. It includes TCP
What is the Internet layer of TCP/IP?
This addresses, routes and packages data packets called IP datagrams. This is the IP protocol
What is the network interface layer of TCP/IP?
This layer places packets on and receives from network medium
What is a local area network?
A LAN connects pc’s within a half-mile radius
What is a peer-to-peer network?
This network is used in small networks. All processors are treated equally
What is a Wide Area Network?
A WAN spans broad distances. Connection is done through public networks
What are metropolitan Area Networks
A MAN spans a metropolitan area
What is bandwith?
This is the range of frequencies accomodated on a communications network. Difference between highest and lowest frequency
What is a Domain Name system?
This system converst domain names (natural language convention) into IP adresses
What is a unified communications system?
This system integrates multiple channels for different communication modes into a single experience where customers can swith between these models
What is Voice over IP (VoIP)?
This delivers voice information into a digital form through packet switching
What is a Digital subscriber line technology?
This technology uses phonelines to carry voice, data and video at high speeds depending on usage and distance
What is a virtual private network (VPN)?
This is an encrypted private network configured within a public networ to use economies of scale and larger network’s facilities.
What is semantic search?
This is building search engines that really understand human behaviour
What is predictive search?
This search algorithm guesses what you are looking for and gives suggestions based on search words
What is search engine optimization (SEO)?
This is optimizing a website ranking on google by improving the quality and volume of web traffic to a website
What is Internet2?
This is a consortium focused on developing next-gen Internet technology
What is Really Simple Syndication (RSS)?
This pulls specific content to user’s computers
What is Web3?
This is the next ‘web’ that would be more decentralized and controlled by users
Name the principal technologies for wireless networking, communications and Internet access?
- Cellular systems (smartphones)
- Wireless computer network and internet acces
- RFID & Wireless sensor networks
Name the differences between 3G, 4G and 5G
3G networks were good for email and web browsing, but too slow for videos. Its being phased out
4G networks are good for downloading, uploading, watching high-definition videos etc.
5G networks will transfer much lager data amounts and be able to connect to many more devices at once. Reduces delays
What is Bluetooth?
This is a wireless networking standard used for creating personal are networks with connections within 10m range.
What are hotspots?
Locations with access points providing wireless Internet access, often in public spaces
What is WiMax?
This is Worldwide Interoperatibility for Microwave Access has wireless range of 30 miles instead of 300 feet.
What is RFID?
Radio Frequency Identification systems provide technology for tracking movements of goods through supply chains through tags with microchips that send a signal to the reader without a required visual in close proximity.
What is near field communication (NFC)?
These are short-range wireless connections using electromagnetic fields to exchange data when brought within a few centimeters of each other.
What are wireless sensor networks?
These networks are interconnected wireless devices in an environment measuring many points over large spaces with built-in processing capabilities.
