Chapter 7 Stimulus Control: Discrimination and Generalization Flashcards
antecedent
A stimulus or event that precedes the target behaviour.
discriminative stimulus (SD)
The stimulus that is present when a particular behaviour is reinforced.
generalization
A process in which the behaviour occurs in the presence of antecedent stimuli that are similar in some way to the discriminative stimulus present when the behaviour was reinforced. Generalization is also defined as the occurrence of a target behaviour in a nontraining situation after training.
S-delta (S small triangle)
A stimulus that is present when a behaviour is not reinforced. In discrimination training, the behaviour is reinforced if it occurs in the presence of the discriminative stimulus (SD) but not in the presence of the S.
stimulus class
A group of stimuli that all have the same functional effect on a particular behaviour. For example, each stimulus in a stimulus class may function as a discriminative stimulus for a particular behaviour.
stimulus control
The outcome of stimulus discrimination training. A particular behaviour is more likely to occur in the presence of a particular discriminative stimulus (the SD) because the behaviour has been reinforced only when the SD was present. The SD has stimulus control over the behaviour.
stimulus discrimination training
A process in which a behaviour is reinforced when the discrimination stimulus (SD) is present and is extinguished when the S-delta is present. As a result, the behaviour is more likely to occur only when the SD is present. Also called discrimination training.
three-term contingency
The antecedent that is present when the behaviour occurs, the behaviour, and the reinforcing consequence. Also called a contingency of reinforcement.
