Chapter 7 - Kinetics and Equilibrium Flashcards
The change in concentration of a reactant or product with time.
Reaction rate
Molecules need to collide in order for a reaction to take place.
Collision theory
The energy that is needed to get reactants close enough together for a reaction to occur
Activation energy
A substance that speeds up the rate of reaction by providing a lower energy pathway but does not undergo any change itself.
Catalyst
A chemical reaction that can only be run in the forward direction; that is, the products do not react to form the reactants.
irreversible process
The state in which the rate of the forward reaction is equal to the rate of the reverse reaction
chemical equilibrium
States that when a chemical system is at equilibrium and is disturbed by a stress, the system will respond by attempting to counteract that stress until a new equilibrium is established.
Le Châtelier’s Principle
