Chapter 5 - Molecular Geometry and Polarity Flashcards
This is the outermost electron-occupied shell of an atom
Valence shell
Electron pairs will repel each other such that the shape of the molecule will adjust so that the valence electron-pairs stay as far apart from each other as possible
Valence-shell electron pair repulsion (VSEPR)
This is defined as the ability of an atom to attract electrons when the atoms are in a compound.
Electronegativity
A covalent bond in which the bonding electrons are shared equally between the two atoms
Nonpolar covalent bond
A covalent bond in which atoms have an unequal attraction for electrons and so the sharing is unequal
Polar covalent bond
A molecule in which one need of the molecule is slightly positive, while the other end s slightly negative.
