A missing child
a person younger than 18 whose location is not known, and who is reported missing to a law enforcement agency.
A missing adult
a person 18 or older whose location is not known, and who is reported missing to a law enforcement agency.
An endangered person
- a missing child, younger than 18
- a missing adult, younger than 26
- a missing adult, older than 26 years and believed to be in danger or the victim of criminal activity
- a missing adult, 18 or older who meets the criteria for a Silver Alert or a Purple Alert
A Missing Child Alert must meet four criteria:
- The child must be younger than 18.
- must conclude that the child is in danger
- Descriptive information or a photograph of the child must be available.
- The agency of jurisdiction must approve the issuance of the Missing Child Alert.
An AMBER Alert must meet five conditions:
- The child must be younger than 18.
- There must be a clear indication of abduction.
- The local law enforcement agency of jurisdiction must recommend the activation.
- A detailed description of the child, the abductor, or the vehicle to broadcast to the public must be available.
- The law enforcement agency’s investigation must conclude that the child’s life is in danger.
Silver Alert
a missing adult who suffers from dementia, Alzheimer’s disease,
or other mental disability
To qualify for a Florida Silver Alert
must be 60 or older, or 18 to 59 who lacks the capacity to consent, and the person must have an irreversible deterioration of intellectual faculties that has been verified by law enforcement.
Silver Alert must meet these criteria for FDLE / FDOT / FHP to activate dynamic message signs:
- Local law enforcement has already activated a local or regional alert by contacting a media outlet in their. own and surrounding jurisdictions.
- Local law enforcement’s investigation must conclude that the disappearance poses a credible threat to the person’s welfare and safety.
- There must be a description of the vehicle, and a license plate number to display.
- Local law enforcement must verify the vehicle and license plate information.
- A local law enforcement agency must have entered the missing person into FCIC and issued a statewide. BOLO to other law enforcement and 911 centers.
Purple Alert
a missing adult who has one or a combination of the following:
• a mental or cognitive disability that is not Alzheimer’s disease or a dementia-related disorder
• an intellectual disability or developmental disability
• another physical, mental, or emotional disability that is not related to substance abuse
Blue Alert
when a law enforcement officer has suffered serious bodily injury, is killed, or is missing while in the line of duty and the suspect poses a serious threat to the public.
Child Abduction Response Team
a multiagency team that assists law enforcement to provide an organized and planned response to an abducted, missing, or endangered child
