Drugs that impair drivers fall into seven major categories
- CNS depressants (alcohol, antidepressants, barbiturates)
- CNS stimulants (amphetamines, cocaine)

- dissociative anesthetics (PCP and ketamine)
- narcotic analgesics (heroin, morphine, opium)
- inhalants (aerosols, paint thinner)
- cannabis (marijuana) and medical marijuana
