Chapter 7 Flashcards
What are nutrients
They’re chemical substances obtained from food and used by the body for many different processes.
What are the three key energy nutrients
- Fats
- Carbohydrates
- Proteins
What’s the central role of carbohydrates in supplying energy?
The main function of carbohydrates ar etc provide materials to build cell membranes and to provide energy for use by cells
What is the formula for when ATP separates to produce energy?
ATP + H2O - > ENERGY + ADP + P
What are the two energy systems and what do they mean?
Aerobic (with oxygen)
Anaerobic (without oxygen)
What are the three metabolic pathways
- ATP-PC
- Glycolysis
- Celular Respiration
What is ATP-PC?
Draws on processes deep within the muscle fibre itself to allow quick, intense muscle contractions. ie. short sprints or pitching a baseball
What is glycolysis?
This pathway involves the PARTIAL breakdown of glucose, with lactic acid as a by-product.
It allows for longer bursts of energy and does not involve oxygen
What is cellular respiration?
It involves oxygen and the COMPLETE breakdown of glucose to yield a large amount of ATP
