Define Culture
The knowledge, rules, traditions, attitudes and values that guide the behaviour of a group of people and allow them to solve the problems of living in their environment

Socio-Economic Status - relative standing in society based on income, power, background and prestige

- schema that that organizes knowledge or perceptions of a category

- reduces working memory capacity
- decreases interest, engagement
long-term effects - disidentification
- seperate sense of self-esteem from academic achievements

gender schema theory
children and adolescence use gender as an organizing theme to classify and understand their perceptions about the world

organized cognitive structure that includes gender-related information that influences how children think and behave

age 5 - clothes, games, toys, behaviours,careers
gender biases
different views of males and females, often favouring one gender over another
multi-cultural education
- education that promotes equality in schooling of all students
culturally relevant pedagogy
includes academic success and developing / maintaining cultural competence and critical consciousness to challenge the status quo
