act of the medullary cough center of the brain to depress the cough reflex
what does antitussives treat?
nonproductive cough
what are some considerations when giving antitussives?
do not use in patients who need to cough to maintain airway, do not give to patients who have a CNS injury, do not give with MAOI’s, assess respirations and adventitious lung/breath sounds
what are the adverse effects when taking antitussives?
dry mucous membranes
GI effects
CNS effects
