Ch 46 Antianginal Agents Flashcards
what are atheroma?
fatty tumors in the intimacy of heart vessels
what is atherosclerosis?
narrowing of the heart vessels
what is angina pectoris?
suffocation of the chest
what is a myocardial infarction?
when coronary vessel becomes completely occluded and is unable to deliver blood to the cardiac muscle; the area of that muscle depends on that vessel for oxygen becomes ischemic and then necrotic
what is stable angina?
no damage to the heart muscle, basic reflexes surrounding the pain restore blood flow
what is unstable angina?
episodes of ischemia occur even when at rest
what is Prinzmental’s angina?
caused by spasms of the blood vessels, not just by vessel narrowing
what are symptoms of a myocardial infarction?
chest pain, nausea, radiating pain to back or arms, severe sympathetic stress reaction, sweating, visual disturbances
what are the classifications of abtianginal drugs?
nitrates, beta-adrenergic blockers, calcium channel blockers
what do antianginal drugs do to blood vessels?
improve blood delivery and oxygen to the heart by dilating blood vessels
what do antianginal drugs decrease?
decrease cardiac workload and the demand for oxygen
What are medication examples of Nitrates?
isosorbide, nitroglycerine
what are the therapeutic uses of Nitrates?
stable angina, prevent MI, treats unstable angina
what is the action of Nitrates?
dilation in blood vessel = relaxation in smooth muscle
When do you use caution in giving nitrates?
hepatic/renal disease, hypotension
