Ch 37 The Endocrine System Flashcards
what is the goal of the endocrine system?
regulate growth and development
reproduction
energy use
electrolyte balance
what are the functions of thyroid hormone?
regulate the rate of metabolism
affects heat production and body temperature
affect oxygen consumption, cardiac output, and blood volume
affect enzyme system activity
affect metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins
regulate growth and development
what hormone does the hypothalamus release?
thyroid releasing hormone
what hormone does the anterior pituitary gland release?
thyroid stimulating hormone
what hormones does the thyroid gland release?
T3, T4, Calcitonin
What medication is prescribed with hypothyroidism?
Levothyroxine
What medication is prescribed with hyperthyroidism?
Methimazole Propythiouracil (PTU)
Strong Iodine Solution
What is hypothyroidism?
not enough TRH, TSH, T3, or T4
what is hyperthyroidism?
too much TRH, TSH, T3, or T4
what disease is hyperthyroidism?
Graves Disease
What are symptoms of hypothyroidism?
intolerance to cold, fatigue, constipation, weight gain, bradycardia, thickened skin, brittle hair and nails
What are symptoms of hyperthyroidism?
intolerance to heat, tachycardia, increased systolic BP, weight loss, building eyes, enlarged thyroid, diarrhea, anxiety
what is the action of levothyroxine?
increase metabolic rate of body tissues, increase oxygen consumption, increase growth and maturation
what are the adverse reactions of levothyroxine?
symptoms look like hyperthyroidism; move from fatigue to anxiety
what should a nurse consider when giving levothyroxine?
thyroid function tests, baseline vital signs
what drug interacts with levothyroxine?
levothyroxine decreases effectiveness of Digoxin
What should you teach a patient taking levothyroxine?
taken for life, taken in mcg, taken in the morning before food
what type of medication is methimazole propythiouracil?
thioamide
what is the action of thioamides?
prevent formation of thyroid hormone, lower T3 or T4 levels
what is the function of iodine solutions?
block thyroid function
what are iodine solutions typically used for?
thyroid cancer
what are the adverse effects of anti-thyroid agents?
looks like hypothyroidism - weight loss to weight gain
What should a nurse consider when giving anti-thyroid agents?
liver function, thyroid function tests, base line vital signs, used for thyroid storm
what should you teach a patient taking anti-thyroid agents?
you do not see results for about a month, takes several weeks for hormones to “die off”
