Benign liver tumor

Describe the histology
A
Normal hepatocytes without bile ducts

What are the associated risk factors?
A
- Women
- birth control pills
- (Think: ABC = Adenoma Birth Control)
- anabolic steroids
- glycogen storage disease

What is the average age of occurrence?
A
30 to 35 years of age

What are the signs/symptoms?
A
- RUQ pain/mass
- RUQ fullness
- bleeding (rare)

What are the possible complications?
A
- Rupture with bleeding (33%)
- necrosis
- pain
- risk of hepatocellular carcinoma

How is the diagnosis made?
A
CT scan
U/S
± biopsy (rule out hemangioma with RBC-tagged scan!)

What is the treatment:
Small?
A
Stop birth control pills—it may regress; if not, surgical resection is necessary

Q
What is the treatment:
Large (>5 cm), bleeding, painful, or ruptured?
A
Surgical resection
