What are the characteristics?
A
- Hundreds of adenomatous polyps within the rectum and colon that begin developing at puberty
- all undiagnosed, untreated patients develop cancer by ages 40 to 50

What is the inheritance pattern?
A
Autosomal dominant (i.e., 50% of offspring)

Adenomatous Polyposis Coli (APC) gene

A
Total proctocolectomy and ileostomy
Total colectomy and rectal mucosal removal (mucosal proctectomy) and ileoanal anastomosis
