Chapter 5- Biochemistry (3) Flashcards

1
Q

Lipids have four main biological roles. What are they?

A

1- They are components of membranes (phospholipids, cholesterol)

2- They act as energy stores

3- Modifies proteins

4- Lipids serve as hormones.

Q

What does a phospholipid contain?

A

A phospholipid contains 2 fatty acids bound through an ester bond to glycerol. A phosphate group also binds to the glycerol.

Q

Cholesterol is a major component of what?

A

Cell membranes- it stabilises the phospholipid bilayer and helps maintain the right fluidity of the plasma /cell membrane.

16
Q

What are the sugars in glycolipids?

A

The sugar is either glucose or galactose

17
Q

What is the general function of glycolipids?

A

They are structural lipids

18
Q

What is the function of lipoproteins?

A

They transport lipids and cholesterol in the blood

19
Q

What are the types of lipoproteins and what are their properties?

A

HDL- high density lipoproteins. Highest in density due to high protein: lipid ratio.

LDL- low density lipoproteins. Has a much higher cholesterol content

VLDL- very low-density lipoprotein. Carries triglycerides.
