Chapter 5 Flashcards
What is energy?
The ability to do work.
What is kinetic energy?
It is moving energy.
What is potential energy?
Stored energy.
What is chemical energy?
Potential energy.
What is a reactant in a chemical reaction?
The original molecules before a reaction occurs.
What is a product in a chemical reaction?
The result of a chemical reaction.
What is an endergonic reaction?
The product contains more energy than the reactants, hence why an outside energy source is needed.
What is an exergonic reaction?
The reactants have more energy than the products, so reactions can occur more spontaneously.
What is activation energy?
The initial input of energy needed to start a chemical reaction.
What is a catalysis?
Help position subunits of polymers to aid in chemical reactions.
What is the active site of enzymes?
The spot on an enzyme where a reactant fits.
What is a denatured protein?
The protein is losing shape because of improper temperature or pH.
What is competitive feedback inhibition?
The inhibitor interferes with the active site of the protein.
What is noncompetitive feedback inhibition?
Inhibitor bonds to the enzyme away from the active site and the enzyme can no longer bond to a substrate.
What is ATP composed of?
Sugar, adenine, and a chain of 3 phosphates with high energy bonds.
