Chapter 23 Flashcards
What does the skeletal system do? Name one at least one component of it.
It is the internal skeleton that protects the body and allows motions. It consists of bones, cartilage, and ligaments.
What does the circulatory system do? Name one at least one component of it.
It transports oxygen, nutrients, and chemical signals to cells in the body. In addition, it removes carbon dioxide, chemical wastes, and water. It consists of the heart, blood vessels, and blood.
What does the endocrine system do? Name one at least one component of it.
It release hormones to control activities within the body. It consists of glands such as pituitary, adrenal, and thyroid.
What does the nervous system do? Name one at least one component of it.
It coordinates the body’s activities. It consists of nerves, sense organs, brain, and spinal cord.
What does the respiratory system do? Name one at least one component of it.
It capture oxygen and exchanges gases. It consists of lungs and trachea.
What does the immune system do? Name one at least one component of it.
It uses special cells to remove foreign bodies from the bloodstream. It consists of lymphocytes and macrophages.
What does the digestive system do? Name one at least one component of it.
It captures nutrients from ingested food. Consists of intestines, mouth, stomach, esophagus, pancreas, and liver.
What does the urinary system do? Name one at least one component of it.
It removes metabolic waste from the bloodstreams. It consists of kidneys and bladder.
What does the muscular system do? Name one at least one component of it.
It produces the body’s movement. It consists of skeletal muscle, cardiac muscle, and smooth muscle.
What does the reproduction system do? Name one at least one component of it.
It carries out reproduction. It consists of ovaries and testes.
What does the integumentary system do? Name one at least one component of it.
It covers and protects the body. It consists of hair, nails, skin, and sweat glands.
Epithelial tissue:
Provide p _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ n, (skin, mucosa)
Provide s _ _ _ _ _ y s _ _ _ _ _ _ s
S _ _ _ _ _ e m _ _ _ _ _ _ _ s (sweat, sebum, mucus, tears)
Protection, sensory surfaces, and secrete materials.
Connective tissue:
True or false: all have abundant extracellular matrix material between widely spaced cells.
Provide structural b _ _ _ _ _ _ g b _ _ _ _ s and defense mechanisms
Include cells of the immune system, skeletal system, and blood and fat cells
True, building blocks
Muscle Tissue:
S _ _ _ _ h muscle: Found in the wall of digestive organs etc.
S _ _ _ _ _ _ l muscle: Associated with bones for movement
C _ _ _ _ _ c muscle: Muscle of the heart
Smooth, skeletal, cardiac.
Nerve Tissue:
N _ _ _ _ _ s: Transmit nerve impulses
G _ _ _ l cells: Support neurons
Neurons, glial.
