Briefly explain James’ 1604 - 11 parliament by naming one event that occurred

and what did it show?

A

This parliament was moslty about his prerogative vs parliaments privilege and showed how parliament were able to use their privilege

  • When MP Shirley was arrested in 1604 for his debts, MPs were upset, as MPs have a privilege that allows them to be immune from arrests, Shirley was then released.
  • James attempts to unite Scot and England in 1606 but fails due to harsh criticism from parliament. Parliament felt that the unity would abolish the English laws, thus James would be absolute ruler

Briefly explain James’ 1614 addled parliament

and what did it show

A

Very inefficient parliament which lasted 8 weeks. It showed how the relations between parliament and the crown weren’t perfect.
the addled parliament it failed due to:
- Financial need meant James had to call on parliament for funds
- factional conflicts; Howard created a faction that supported Catholic Spain, this brought disfunction
- James was indecisive with picking a secretary of state
- James tried to manipulate MPs, this made Parliament fearful of absolutism

Briefly explain James’ 1621 parliament

and what did it show?

A

This Parliament showed how James abused his prerogative.

James wanted the Spanish Match to occur, and believed by giving parliament the ability to discuss foreign policy (they’d obviously be negative) it means Spain would be scared and agree the Spanish Match.
- MPs were a bit too overly anti Spain and started criticizing the Spanish Match
- James then backtracked and stripped their ability to discuss foreign policy, this made parliament mad

Briefly explain James’ 1624 parliament

and what did it show?

A

As he was ill, Charles and Buckingham ran foregin policy, and after the failiure of the Madrid trip, they became anti Spanish and began the anglo-spanish war.

This parliament showed James kept a working realtionship with the political nation before his death

Briefly explain Charles’ 1625 parliament by naming one event that occurred

and what did it show?

A

To fiannce the war against Spain, Charles needed 1 million pounds from parliament, but when asking, he didn’t explain himself properly. thus was granted only tonnage and poundage for one year as well as two small subsides, he obviously saw this as taking the piss out of his prerogative

  • Charles also appointed Richard Montague as his royal Chaplin, which angered parliament as Richard was anti Calvinist, this angered parliament
  • Parliament did not like the influence Buckingham had
  • Charles then failed to overtake Spanish port of Cadiz, this was due to his army not being supplied with food and trained

Briefly explain Charles’ 1626 parliament by naming one event that occurred

and what did it show?

A

Due to Buckingham having too much influence, parliament tried to impeach him.
In response Charles threatened Parliament’s future existence.
- Parliament felt this was very absolutist, as well as his bad first impressions of being needy for money and Charles using forced loans, meant parliament were unhappy with Charles.

  • Shows how difficult Charles was.

Briefly explain Charles 1628-29 parliament by naming one event that occurred

and what did it show?

A

Parliament agreed to give Charles 5 subsides if he agreed to deal with grievances such as tax, billeting and martial law.

  • Petition of right was introduced by parliament who felt Charles should have powers reduced.
  • Charles agreed to it, as he was desperate for funds.

showed how dependent Charles was on parliament.

A

A petition from 28’ that demanded changes to the unwritten constitution and reduced Charles power
- Parliament had to consent to taxation
- People could only be imprisoned if a just cause was shown
- Imposition of martial law was illegal
- Imposition of billeting was illegal
