- The political nation felt the MGs posed a threat to the political nations control over the localities. As the lesser gentries were gaining more control.
- The MGs started removing conservatives from local governments

- Document presented to Oliver Cromwell in 1657, proposing a new form of government with Cromwell as king but with limited powers
- Cromwell rejected it as the army seriously opposed it and would just remove him, and army opposition would mean god opposes him being king
