Tories
- Believed in divine right
- Hated toleration
- Some were Jacobites; wanted a return to Catholicism

Whigs
- Believed in liberty; power to the people, through parliament sharing power
- Wanted greater toleration
- Completely supported the takeover of William

A

After the Battle of the Boyne, William nd Mary began to remove Tories from government, as they would support their war efforts against France
- Court vs Country became the main debate
- Whig supporting the court
- Tories supporting the country (they opposed the Williams government)

A

Due to the Treaty of Ryswick (97’) meant the war halted, and Tories’ position of stopping the war aligned with the country’s demands; a cut in land tax.
