Chapter 4E - Agility Technique Flashcards

1
Q

How can you define agility?

A

It is loosely defined as an athlete’s collective coordinative abilities and technical skills used to perform the wide range of motor tasks of the sport from fine motor to gross, powerful, and dynamic tasks.

Agility is an important component of many athletic endeavors and relies on perceptual cognitive abilities as well as the ability to decelerate and re-accelerate in the intended directions and as quickly and seamlessly as possible.

Q

One of the factors that influence agility is adaptive ability, explain what that is?

A

Adaptive ability: how well the athlete can respond to observed and anticipated changes in the condition or sports situation and modify their actions accordingly.

Q

Two of the factors that influences agility is balance and combinatory ability. What do those things mean?

A

Balance: The ability to establish and maintain static and dynamic equilibrium in the body.

Combinatory ability: Ability to coordinate movements of the body during a given action

Q

Three things that influence agility are orientation, reactiveness and rhythm, explain what those are.

A

Orientation: Body movement and control in terms of spatial and temporal parameters

Reactiveness: The rapid, correct response to various stimuli

Rhythm: Ability to respond and implement appropriate timing and variation of dynamic motor patterns

Q

Explain a bit about the preparatory body and limb position for agility tasks.

A

It will vary per the task put usually gaze forward or slightly down. Arms in athletic position or down, bodyweight on midfoot.

Remind athletes to breath, maintain good upright posture and neutral spine.

Q

Talk a bit about the execution of technique during an agility drill.

A

Athletes should be taking quick, light steps with weight on their forefoot, with knees coming toward the chest by firing hip flexors and core muscles.

Agility drills should be on most days with sports that require it, but for a short time due to the technique and focus required.
