What’s an antigen?
something that stimulates the production of antibodies
typically viruses, bacterium, poison
What are antibodies?
they are protein substances made by white blood cells in response to the presence of foreign antigens

What is a vaccine and why do they help us?
Vaccines are made up of dead or weakened antigens. When you receive a vaccine, your while blood cells are stimulated and start making antibodies. These antibodies that are created remain in your blood to protect you against those specific antigens when encountered in the future.

What is congenital anomaly?
a irregularity in a structure or organ that occurs at or before birth
ie: webbed feet or fingers (syndactyly), heart defects, and clubbed feet
*some congenital anomalies are hereditary (passed to the infant through chromosomes) while others are produced by factors present during pregnancy (ie: a woman drinks alcohol during pregnancy and the baby is born with physical or mental defects)
What is a syndrome?
a group of signs or symptoms that appear together to produce a typical clinical picture of a disease or inherited abnormality.
Ex 1:) Reye syndrome: characterized by vomiting, swelling of the brain, increased intracranial pressure, hypoglycemia, and dysfunction of the liver. May occur in children after a viral infection is treated with aspirin
Ex2.) Marfan syndrome: an inherited connective tissue disorder marked by a tall thin body type with long, spidery fingers and toes, elongated head, and heart, blood vessels, and ophthalmic abnormalities. Michael Phelps has this.
What is ultrasonography?
a diagnostic technique using ultrasound waves to produce an image of an organ or a tissue. A machine records ultrasonic echoes as they pass through different types of tissue
