Chapter 4 and 5 Flashcards
What is this?
mons pubis: the area on top of the vulva covered in pubic hair (unless it has been removed) which contains a thin layer of fat to offer cushioning during sex
What is this?
prepuce/clitoral hood: located on top of the clitoris
What is this?
Vestibule: contains the vaginal opening, the urethral opening, and the clitoris
What is this?
Clitoral glans: the most sensitive external part of the clitoris, which becomes engorged during sexual arousal
What is this?
perineum: the relatively flat area that resides between the vagina and anus and can be erotically sensitive for many people with vulvas
What is this?
labia majora (outer labia): two pairs of skin that fold down and around the vulva on the outside
labia minora (inner labia): two pairs of skin that fold down and around the vulva on the inside
What is this?
anus: made up of internal and external sphincter muscles that control excretion
What is this?
Introitus/vaginal opening is the connecting point between the interior and exterior genitalia
What is this?
urethral opening: the opening for where urine exits the body
What is this?
corpora cavernosu: erectile tissue within the shaft of the clitoris
What is this?
glans: the most sensitive external part of the clitoris, which becomes engorged during sexual arousal
What is this?
crura: the internal part of the clitoris which is a wishbone like structure
What is this?
urethral opening: the opening for where urine exits the body
What is this?
vestibular bulbs: curved masses residing beneath the crura
What is this?
Introitus/vaginal opening is the connecting point between the interior and exterior genitalia
What is this?
What is this?
corona: the rim of tissue that encircles the glans
What is this?
urethra opening
What is this?
glans: the head of the penis, resides on top of the penile shaft
What is this?
urethra: serves the double function of discharging semen and urine
What is this?
corpora cavernosa: two tube-like masses on either side of the penis that form most of the erectile tissue
What is this?
corpus spongiosum: tube-like column of spongy tissue that surrounds the urethra, contains erectile tissue, and runs through the shaft and glans
What is this?
Root
What is this?
Shaft
What is this?
corpus spongiosum: tube-like column of spongy tissue that surrounds the urethra, contains erectile tissue, and runs through the shaft and glans
What is this?
corpora cavernosa: two tube-like masses on either side of the penis that form most of the erectile tissue
What is this?
urethra: serves the double function of discharging semen and urine
What increases your chances of anorgasmia?
Small clitoral size and larger distance from the vaginal opening during penetrative sex
What is the average size and circumference of a flaccid penis?
3-4 inches long
3-4 inches around
What is the average size and circumference of an erect penis?
5-6 inches long
4-5 inches around
What percentage of penis’ are larger than 7 inches?
15%
What does penis size depend on?
Heredity
Can you change your size permanently? What are some ways to alter it?
No way to change it other than surgery (risky)
Exercise, eating well, no smoking, and losing weight
Penile ring, vacuum pump can add a small temporary increase
Do sexual partners care about size? What is the most important?
NOPE
Width usually more important than length
What percent of penises are circumcised worldwide?
30% - # varies dramatically in different places
What percent of babies are circumcised in the US?
77% of infants are circumcised, # is declining
Anti-circumcision movement
It is barbaric, does not provide major medical benefits, reduces penile sensitivity, does not promote bodily autonomy
What is the American Academy of Pediatrics stance on circumcision?
AAP; circumcision lowers risk of penile cancer, urinary infections in infants, HIV, genital herpes, HPV, syphilis
In 2012, AAP said benefits outweigh risks, insurance should cover it but decision should be left to parents
Sunna
Removal of the prepuce (most similar to circumcision)
Excision
Complete removal of clitoral glans and sometimes some of labia minora
Infibulation
Removal of clitoral glans, all labia minora, and a part of labia majora
- Labia majora sewn shut
- Small hole left for passage of urine and menses
- 15% are this type
What are the complications with vulvar cutting?
Trouble with urination, menstruation and intercourse, hemorrhaging, infection, death
How many and who are vulvar cutting performed on?
- Affects around 80 - 120 million people world wide, primarily in Africa
- Usually performed on girls before puberty, often by practitioners without formal
medical training in unsterile environments
What is the role of the pubococcygeus?
-Steadily contracts during sex and helps to stiffen the walls of the vagina during sexual arousal.
-During orgasm, the muscle rhythmically contracts, producing feelings of intense pleasure.
-Helps to keep semen in the vagina
-Preventing urine from escaping
