- Many diseases appeared to the first settlers

A
- Farmers who were searching for employment
- They went to American and worked for Chesapeake masters for several years
- They would get provisions, like tools and food, and sometimes even a small gift of land in exchange for their work

- Whoever paid for the workers’ passage got the right to get 50 acres of land

- Virginia’s governor
- He was miserable b/c the people were unhappy but armed
- He tried to accommodate to the Indians but the colonists disliked it
- He was driven away from Jamestown

- Led a group of people to kill Indian’s and drive Berkeley away
- When he died, Berkeley came back and killed more than 20 rebels - The rebellion shook the foundation of traditional authority

- They were very high priced compared to white servants
- They were jammed into a hold in a ship which killed or traumatized the Africans
- The Europeans hungered for New World Products which they slaves fulfilled
- The African slaves began to outnumber white servants

- Monopoly of importing slaves

- A gruesome passage the ships carrying slaves followed
- Death rates became as high as 20%

- There were restrictions so you couldn’t teach your slaves how to read or write and a Christian slave did not make a free slave
