Culture:
Any group of people who identify with one another based in some common purpose, need, background, and share experience, beliefs, and values.
Multicultural vs. Cross-cultural
Multicultural refers to a society containing several cultural/ethnic groups
Cross-cultural refers to the comparison of different cultures, usually against the majority culture
Culture vs diversity
Culture is a common experience, belief, or value shared among a group of people
Diversity is the differences among cultures, groups, and individuals
Culture-Infused Counselling
The integration of attitudes and beliefs, knowledge, and skills essential to be aware of the impact of culture on cultural s of-awareness, awareness of client culture, a culturally sensitive working alliance, and embracing social justice
Etic vs Emic
Etic is the view that cultural counselling has universal aspects that apply across cultures
Emic is the view that counselling needs to be culturally specific.
Cultural encapsulation:
To be colour blind, or ignore diversity. This is discounting differences among cultures, and treating everyone the same. Need to take into account experience, to respect and honour differences
Acculturation
Minority cultures adopting the culture, beliefs, values, and attitudes of majority cultures or the dominant culture
Adopting a “not knowing” position
We don’t know the experiences or feelings of people, and we cannot assume that we do.
