Behavioural approaches
Help client change, by changing maladaptive behaviour and learning new behaviour. Include: systematic desensitization, in Vito desensitization, implosion/flooding, assertiveness training, and behaviour modification
Systematic desensitization
Client learns relaxation response and applies it to increasingly stressful situations, replacing anxiety with relaxation responses.
In Vivo desensitization
Slowly go from one end to the other, replacing fear with relaxation
Assertive training
Express needs and feelings, distinguishing between assertive, aggressive, and passive. DESC, describe actions, express feelings, specify change, and consequences
Cognitive-Behavioural Therapies
Emotional distress and maladaptive behaviours result from problematic cognition and belief. Main goal is to change problematic cognition, while providing guidance.
Rational-Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT)
Problems caused by irrational beliefs and thought patterns, goal being to correct thought patterns through challenging logic, and equipping with rational and effective beliefs
ABC model of change
Activating event, belief, consequence.
Dispute (former belief), effective belief (replaces) and new feeling
