Three phase of surgery; also known as the perioperative phase
Preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative
Begins when the decision to have surgery is made and ends when the patient is transferred to the operating table
Preoperative phase
Begins when the client is transferred to the operating table and ends when the client is admitted to the post anesthesia care unit
Intraoperative phase
Begins when the client is admitted to the post anesthesia are a and ends when healing is complete
postoperative phase
Performed immediately to preserve function or the life of the client
Emergency surgery
Performed when surgical intervention is the preferred treating for a condition that is not imminently life threating.
Elective surgery
Confirms or establishes a diagnosis
Diagnostic
Relieves or reduces pain or systems of a disease; does not cure
Palliative
Removes a diseased body part
Ablative
Restores function of appearance that has been lost or reduced
Constructive
Replaces malfunctioning structures
Transplant
Surgery that involves a high degree of risk; may be complicated / prolonged; large losses of blood may occur
Major
Surgery that normally involves little risk
Minor
Can lead to delayed wound healing
Malnutrition
Leads to hypertension, impaired cardiac function and impaired respiratory ventilation.
