What did Purcell contribute?
Music in England wasn’t improving very quickly like the other European countries. He wrote a lot of music for the King and Queen which was a hard thing to do since they really didn’t want to put much money into it. He composed 20 odes for the royal family.

an elaborate courtly entertainment using music, dance, and drama to portray an allegorical story to praise the king

multi-movement piece with instrumental introduction, choruses, duets, and solo arias, no recitative or drama
