A

He created the first two real operas. Before, all they had were plays with intermedios which are sung plays within the play. Peri’s opera was the first fully sung dramatic work.

A

Monteverdi added more instruments to his works. He added other parts to the opera too such as choral songs, choral dances, and instrumental pieces. Poppea wasn’t drawn from a Greek myth so that was different.

Explain Monteverdi’s Orfeo performance.

A

He wanted a small audience so he had it in this small room. The room was called a noble man’s room. They had no electricity. They performed in the corner of this room. It was not a stage. Behind them was a curtain and behind the curtain was the instrumentalists. The audience had to stand to watch the performance.

An arioso has less repeated notes than a recitative but doesn’t quite have the melody an aria has.

A

Made up of Bardi, Galilei, mei and others. They discussed literature, science, and the arts. They wanted to make a style of music that was similar to vocal declamation of ancient Greek tragedy.
