Dafne and Euridice (5 scenes)
What were Monteverdi’s major works? And length of production?

What did Peri contribute to the opera world?
He created the first two real operas. Before, all they had were plays with intermedios which are sung plays within the play. Peri’s opera was the first fully sung dramatic work.
What did Monteverdi contribute to the opera world?
Monteverdi added more instruments to his works. He added other parts to the opera too such as choral songs, choral dances, and instrumental pieces. Poppea wasn’t drawn from a Greek myth so that was different.
Explain Monteverdi’s Orfeo performance.
He wanted a small audience so he had it in this small room. The room was called a noble man’s room. They had no electricity. They performed in the corner of this room. It was not a stage. Behind them was a curtain and behind the curtain was the instrumentalists. The audience had to stand to watch the performance.
What is the difference between an aria, a recitative, and an arioso?
An arioso has less repeated notes than a recitative but doesn’t quite have the melody an aria has.
