Define Wa?
The first inhabitants of Japan. They traded, bought, and sometimes fought with the kingdoms on the Korean peninsula.
Who was Yamato?
The first known dynasty, which ruled around AD 270. They governed the fertile Yamato plain, providing easy access to the Inland Sea.
Define Bambetsu.
The clans that lived on the island Kyushu, which was located south
of Yamato.
Who is Chinhung?
Successor of Pophung of Silla, allied with Baekje to reclaim land from Goguryeo. After defeating Goguryeo, he betrayed Baekje and took the territory, making Silla the strongest kingdom on the peninsula.
Define Kimmei.
The heavenly sovereign that accepted Buddhism into his culture.
Define Shinto.
The traditional faith of Japan. In its
earliest forms, Shinto depended on rituals.
Who is Sogo no Iname?
The Soga chief permitted by Kimmei to build a temple and adopt Buddhism.
Who is Sogo no Umako?
Chief of the Soga clan who ordered the assassination of Yamato king Sushun in response to a death threat.
Who is Suiko?
Daughter of Kimmei who was appointed queen by Soga no Umako after Sushun’s death.
Who is Sunshun?
Descendant of Kimmei’s dynasty who rebelled against the Soga clan but was killed by an assassin sent by Soga no Umako.
Why did King Seong of Baekje move his capital from Ungjin to Sabi?
King Seong of Baekje relocated his capital from Ungjin to Sabi around 540 to demonstrate his ambitions for unifying the entire peninsula against Silla and Goguryeo.
Why wasn’t Seong of Baekje afraid of making an alliance with the northern Chinese?
Baekje, situated at the tip of the peninsula, had sufficient land and water buffer from China, allowing it to make goodwill gestures without fearing invasion
Why did king Seong of Baekje ally himself with Chinhung of Silla? How did it backfire?
Baekje sought to reclaim the Han River basin from the Goguryeo by allying with Silla. After driving out the Goguryeo, Silla betrayed Baekje and took the land for itself, reflecting the shifting alliances in ancient Korea
