During Wei Xiaowen’s rule, the Shaolin Monastery was founded on Mount Song by the Indian monk Batuo. Monks there practiced physical exercises to aid in meditation. According to legend, Bei Wei generals noticed these exercises, saw their potential for combat, and incorporated them into the early foundations of kung fu.
