Chapter 3 Flashcards
Extinction
Decrease strength
Never full extinguished, spontaneous recovery
By systematically withholding the previous positively reinforcing consequences
The contingency between target response and positive reinforcer is discontinued
Single-subject evaluations
determine if intervention is responsible for change in behaviour
AB
Multiple Baseline design
intervention staggered over 2+ target behaviours that are independent
Measure the baselines
simultaneously and look for
changes in rates, when the
intervention is subsequently
applied
* If due to another event, then
changes would occur all at
once.
ABAB
ABAB steps
Determine baseline rate of undesired behaviour
Determine the positive reinforcer for undesired
behaviour
Remove this positive reinforcer for this undesired
behaviour (AB)
Measure the new rate of undesired behaviour*
(Reinstate positive reinforcer to demonstrate it is the
positive reinforcer - ABAB)
(Measure the new rate with positive reinforcer back
in place)
active ignoring
- Stay silent and turn your eyes away
- Keep facial expression neutral (“robot face”)
- Do not communicate anything with your body
language/non-verbal language - Leave the area of the child, you can go to the other side
of the room - Be ready to praise when they switch their behavior to
something appropriate (and be ready to switch back!)
will most likely get worse before getting better
extinction consistency
Key: positive
reinforcement
must be
consistently
withheld
Key: preventing
delivery of
positive
reinforcement
by others
differential reinforcement
Must to both at the same time:
* Extinguish Undesired Behaviors
* Positively Reinforce Desired Behaviors
spontaneous recovery
Recurrence of behaviour after
it has been extinguished
Usually, a similar situation as
when it was previously being
positively reinforced
Reinstate the extinction
procedures immediately
