Chapter 29 - Senses Flashcards
What are the five categories of sensory defectors and what do they detect?
Thermoreceptors - sense heat
Mechanoreptors - senses mechanical energy such as touch, pressure, stretching, motion, and sound
Chemoreceptors - sense blood oxygen and carbon dioxide
Electromagnetic receptors - sense energy through electricity, wave lengths of light or magnetism
Nociceptors - detect pain
What are the five senses?
Hearing and balance, vision, taste, smell, and touch
How does the sense hearing and balance work?
Occurs through the stimulation on long projections on hair cells in fluid filled canals
What is the function of the sense vision?
The ability to detect light which occurs in the retina
- two categories of photo receptors
- cones see colors
- rods see light
What is function of the senses taste and smell?
They both use chemoreceptors to detect molecules, air, and solutions.
* fancy word for smell is oldfaction
What is the function of the sense touch?
Mechanoreceptors sensing a change in pressure
Name the three different types of eyes.
Eyecups, compound eyes, and single lens eyes
What can eyecups detect?
Light
What is a compound eye?
An image forming eye made of several thousand light detectors, each have its own light focusing lens and several photo receptor cells.
What is a single lens eye?
A single lens eye enters through the pupil passing through the lens and focuses light on the retina
What does the iris control?
Pupil size
