Chapter 26 - Hormones and the Endocrine System Flashcards
What is the endocrine system?
Group of interacting glands and tissues throughout the nomad body that produce secrete chemicals to initiate and maintain body functions and activities.
Name the two systems that are primarily responsible for body communication. What is the difference between these two systems in terms of causing a bodily response?
Endocrine System - lasts longer
Nervous System - acts faster
What are the chemical signals used by the endocrine system called and how do they work, generally?
Hormones and they release into the bloodstream by endocrine cells no carried to all locations in the body
What are the three stages of hormone signaling?
Reception, signal transduction, and response
What are the two groups of hormones and where can each travel within the body?
Water soluble and lipid soluble. Lipid soluble can go through the phospholipid bilayer.
